Kōji Wakamatsu (若松 孝二, 1936-2012) was a Japanese filmmaker whose provocative style and unflinching take on sex and violence left an indelible mark on cinema.
His work, though often polarizing, stands as a bold testament to film’s power to shock, unsettle, and ultimately spark deep reflection on the darker corners of human nature and society.
Early Life and Career
Born in Miyagi Prefecture, Wakamatsu was a rebel from the get-go. Kicked out of high school and later doing time for running with the yakuza, he found his true calling in filmmaking—a way to stick it to the system he loathed without landing back behind bars.>
“When I got out of prison, I had a score to settle with the authorities and their brutality. But I knew violence would just throw me back in a cell. So I picked a different weapon: cinema. Violence in movies is part of a director’s toolbox, and at least they can’t lock you up for it.”
His career took off in the 1960s, quickly earning a reputation for films that stirred up a heady mix of erotica, politics, and violence.
In 1965, he founded Wakamatsu Production, giving him the creative freedom to dive into taboo subjects and flip the bird at the social and cinematic norms of the era.
Standout Works
As a producer, Wakamatsu backed the infamous "In the Realm of the Senses" (1976), directed by Nagisa Ōshima. Based on a true story, it follows the obsessive, self-destructive sexual relationship between a former prostitute and a hotel owner.
With its raw, explicit scenes and unflinching exploration of the line between pleasure and death, the film caused a global uproar and solidified Wakamatsu’s rep as a filmmaker who’d tackle any taboo head-on.
