Do You Need to Be 'Fit' for Erotic Shibari?

One of the most common questions that comes up when we teach body techniques (taijutsu - 體術) is whether you need to be in a certain physical condition beforehand—or whether getting your body 'in shape' is actually a requirement for practising and enjoying erotic shibari.

The short answer is no, it isn't.

Part of our job as instructors is to adapt both our students' expectations and the techniques we teach to their actual reality and circumstances.

Before we go any further, it's worth clarifying that we're talking about shibari in the context of erotic interaction—not its acrobatic or performance-based applications.

Do you warm up or stretch before having sex? There you go.

Why Fitness Still Matters

That said, if we want to dig a little deeper: cultivating and maintaining good physical fitness isn't just important—it's necessary for a healthy life across the board, not only when it comes to shibari.

The foundation is nothing new: health and wellbeing require a working balance between nutrition, rest, and movement.

That's the baseline we hope to find in our students, though the reality is usually quite different. As people get older, they tend to carry more physical compensations, have less time, and resist change more—in every area of life.

Shibari Demands Precision, Not Power

So how much does physical fitness actually matter in erotic shibari? Quite a lot.

The efficiency and safety of the practice depend directly on physical condition, since it relies on the optimal use of muscles and joints—activation and mobility—rather than raw strength or flexibility.

Good posture and efficient joint movement are non-negotiable; without them, compensations creep in.

The techniques within the taijutsu - 體術 framework, grounded in human physiology and biomechanics, also have a direct impact on the erotic experience itself. The mobility of the pelvic floor muscles, or the connection between dopamine, motor circuits, and erotic desire, are just two examples of what we mean.

This doesn't mean that being fitter guarantees a more intense erotic experience, bigger orgasms, or anything along those lines—there are plenty of other factors at play. Think of it as one more tool for shaping and managing how each person experiences their sexuality.

What we can say with confidence is that applying shibari techniques more efficiently will have an effect on the erotic experience.

What 'Improving Your Physical Condition' Actually Means

Let's start with what it isn't: it's not about getting 'stronger'. In this area, we don't recommend strength-based training, as it tends to isolate individual muscles or muscle chains. We're interested in working the body as a whole—as one integrated system.

The first step is getting to know your own body, becoming aware of it, and building proprioception. The path will look different for everyone, but practices like tai chi or Pilates can be a solid starting point.

And if you're interested—beyond shibari training, our school also offers personalised functional training programmes. Get in touch.

"I Don't Have Time to Train…"

It's something we hear almost every day.

Let's be honest: if you're not willing to put in the work to develop skills and teach them to your body, they're not going to appear out of thin air.

As instructors, we can absolutely scale the technique down to a minimum-effort level and make sure it's fun, exciting, and gives you plenty of great moments—but you'll also need to adjust your expectations accordingly.

Forget surfing across the body of a suspended partner; think more along the lines of enjoying safe, well-executed positions where you can move with confidence.
