Managing rope tension while tying takes practice and mindfulness—not just of what we’re doing, but of the effects we’re creating.
Take the classic toy telephone made of two cups and a string. For it to work, the string needs to be taut. Its function hinges on the principle of vibration transmission.
According to this principle, vibrations travel through a material by oscillating its particles. The denser the particles, the more efficiently vibrations are transmitted.
Conversely, the greater the space between particles, the more the vibrations weaken, losing energy as they travel.
In the cup-and-string telephone, if the string is taut, sound—essentially a wave, a vibration—travels easily over a distance. If the string goes slack, the sound struggles to make it through: it won’t travel as far, and whatever does arrive will be of poorer quality.
In shibari, it’s the same with the rope: it needs to stay taut to transmit vibrations.
Why Do We Need to Transmit Vibrations?
In erotic shibari, one of the core elements is stimulation: creating sensations, eliciting reactions, and managing them within an erotic context, amplifying or tempering them as the moment calls for.
Tension in the body (activation) and tension in the rope are essential tools for enabling indirect stimulation.
The rope, as it wraps around the body, acts as a conduit for vibrations to the skin, allowing the person tying to control the sensations and stimulation experienced by the person being tied.
Beyond that, this transmission of vibrations lets the person tying give cues to the person being tied, guiding their movements—like asking them to stand, shift to one side, or move in a particular direction.
That’s why maintaining tension throughout the entire session is critical. Hence the advice to never let go of the rope’s end or allow it to go slack.
Losing tension means breaking the communication. That’s disruptive and, at times, annoying for the person being tied. Think of a phone call with a spotty signal that keeps dropping—it’s hardly satisfying.
Yukimura Haruki, one of the great historical masters of shibari, used the term nawajiri to describe managing the rope from its end.
Tension Isn’t Force: A Taut Rope Isn’t a Tight Rope
And here’s the key: the rope must stay taut, without slack along its entire length, but it shouldn’t be tight. There’s a sweet spot in between, and finding it isn’t easy. It takes practice and honing your sensitivity.
A rope that’s too tight, besides potentially being uncomfortable for the person being tied (depending on their preferences), might seem like it enhances vibration transmission. And technically, it does.
But that’s not necessarily the most compelling approach. In erotic shibari, we aim for subtlety and suggestion, steering clear of explicit, direct, or overly intense signals, as these can clash with the emotional state of the person being tied and pull them out of the erotic context.
For both reasons, we avoid ropes that are either too loose or overly tight. Rope structures need firmness, but they shouldn’t constrict.
A loose tie tends to be dangerous; a tight tie leans toward ineffectiveness.
One crucial detail: tension must be consistent across the ENTIRE tie—not just the sections wrapping the body, but also the length of rope running from the person being tied to the person tying.
What Kinds of Vibrations?
Any movement, impact, or friction will create vibrations that the rope will carry. But not all are desirable—some should be avoided.
To avoid: Any vibrations that cause a “jolt” for the person being tied, especially while tying.
For example: while handling the rope and closing shapes on the back of the person being tied, they shouldn’t wobble from tugs on the rope.
Those tugs can be very effective for managing the emotional moment, but they must be controlled. The person tying needs to develop the skill to handle the rope “dramatically” without affecting the balance of the person being tied.
Once again, the goal is not to disrupt or pull the person being tied out of the moment.
On a muscular level, we need to recognize that jolts, tugs, or unsteady movements—things the person tying might see as minor—are absorbed by the active muscles of the person being tied, potentially causing fatigue or discomfort.
Interesting Vibrations
Those that help manage arousal in a controlled, subtle way. You might try running your nails against the nawajiri in the opposite direction or giving it light, rhythmic taps, like a pizzicato.
The friction of rope against rope, especially when untying (remember: when sliding the rope along its length, it should always rub against itself, NEVER against the skin), often creates a rich source of intriguing stimuli.
Practical Examples
Managing tension while tie the musubime: wrapping and embracing.
In dirtynawa-style ties (those involving the pelvis and genitals), depending on the person—and typically when they’re not in a heightened state of arousal—circular motions (like jumping rope or twirling a lasso) with varying rhythm and frequency are a clear example of transmitting vibrations to increase stimulation.
A couple of notes on genital ties:
First: in states of high arousal, directly and intensely stimulating the genitals can backfire, as the area’s hypersensitivity might make it uncomfortable or even painful.
Second: You may have seen some manuals recommend placing a knot in the rope to hit “the key spot.” Well, that’s frankly a terrible idea.
Rope Tension Should Match Body Tension
Both tensions should be equivalent. In other words, the rope should mirror the body’s tension/activation.
This is easy to check. Once a structure is complete—say, an Ikue Shibari—lightly touch the triceps to gauge muscle activation. Then touch the rope at the back, along the line at the same height, between the arm and the central knot.
If both have the same tension, the physical handling of the person being tied will feel smoother. The greater the difference, the less natural their body will respond.
And as above, so below: if physical handling isn’t fluid and organic, emotional handling will follow suit.
This system works by leveraging the combination of the rope’s torque twist with the body’s muscle force distribution, also in torque.
The rope acts, in a sense, like an external “tendon,” linking the kinetic circuit of the person tying to that of the person being tied. For this technique to work, both people need to maintain active, balanced postures.
Challenges
Managing rope tension while tying isn’t easy: it demands practice and attention to both what we’re doing and the effects we’re producing. Below are some key moments to watch out for to avoid losing tension.
Handling
You’re crafting a shape, wrapping the body with the rope, everything’s going smoothly: the tension is spot-on, the response is great. But when you close the shape with a knot or lock, the tension slips away.
Don’t worry—you’re probably fumbling like you’ve got two left hands. Chances are, you’re trying to wrangle the rope with all your fingers at once and gripping it too tightly.
Take a moment to think, don’t rush to close the shape. Hold the tension, engage your core.
Make a lock: one hand moves the rope, the other is ready to catch it when there’s no more slack to give.
Get used to using the fingers of one hand for different tasks: some hold the rope, others move it, and the other hand picks it up.
Understand the dynamics of the knot or lock you’re about to make; visualize each step before you execute it.
Open and Closed Body
If we don’t pay attention to the posture of the person being tied before and during the tie, managing rope tension becomes very difficult.
A classic case: you tie someone with a closed posture (shoulders forward), complete the tie, and then they shift to an open posture (shoulders back), creating several centimeters of slack in a tie that was perfectly taut just seconds ago.
Sustained Activation
This happens more often in practice than in erotic play, but we’ve seen it plenty of times.
The tie is solid, the body is active, but when you suspend—say, in a gote-style shape—the rope pulls away from the body, and it’s not as comfortable as it should be.
The issue lies in changes in the degree of activation of the person being tied during the process. Likely, at the start, they were over-activated from excitement; then, during the tying, they relaxed a bit from fatigue or habit; and later, during suspension, they tried to ramp up activation again.
The problem is that the ropes were applied based on the initial activation or weren’t adjusted for later changes, so they no longer fit properly.
How Do We Avoid This?
The person tying must manage BOTH activation and the tie at ALL times. Typically, the person being tied activates according to what’s needed at each moment: standing, sitting, climbing stairs, or being suspended each require different levels of activation.
We need to ensure activation matches the demands of each phase, pacing energy and, above all, keeping in mind that, even with shifts in rhythm and tempo, activation should always build gradually: from less to more.
