Bringing the arms behind the back is one of the most effective forms of anatomical restriction.

On one hand, restraining the arms and positioning them behind the back significantly limits the body’s ability to maintain balance, as the arms can no longer serve as natural counterweights.

This restriction reduces the person’s mobility, including their ability to use their legs for walking or running. Even though we’re bipedal, we rely on our arms for both balance and practical functions. Since they’re almost always in our field of vision, they form the foundation of our body’s proprioception.

With this type of restriction, the bound person loses much of their ability to manage their balance, posture, and spatial awareness.

It’s the responsibility of the person tying to take over that management, thereby reinforcing the asymmetry in resource control that’s characteristic of sekibaku.

At a neurological level, when the arms can’t be used, the brain shifts their balance-related functions to other available tools—namely, the toes and, most importantly, the axis between the pelvis and the sternum.

In an erotic context, this heightened focus on the pelvis can be particularly interesting for creating indirect stimulation.

But be cautious: this type of restriction allows the bound person to "position" themselves without engaging their muscles or, worse, by pushing their joints—specifically the shoulders—into a passive range, increasing the risk of injury.

Situations to Watch For

There are two situations to monitor when applying this restriction. We’ll call them "go limp" and "don’t move".

Understanding what’s happening in the body during these scenarios, along with the risks they pose, is key to managing sessions knowledgeably.

"Go Limp"

This happens when the bound person allows their body to be manipulated without any proprioception or connection to what’s being done. They move passively, without engaging.

The person tying won’t need to exert much energy to perform the restriction, but it won’t be effective or truly restrictive. This is because the muscles will be soft and disengaged, and the scapula will lift to accommodate the movement.

As a result, the shoulder ends up in an unstable position with uneven force distribution, increasing the risk of injury for the bound person.

"Don’t Move"

This occurs when the bound person resists.

Typically, this happens when they’ve been told to stay still and endure all manipulations to their body.

In this case, the person tying forces the movement and expends a lot of energy. However, they’re not actually managing or restricting the other person’s body, as the bound person is voluntarily holding and sustaining the posture.

From a biomechanical perspective, if the bound person resists, they’ll activate their stabilizing muscles and actively use their body weight in opposition to the movement being applied to their shoulder, trying to prevent it from being pulled back.

This creates a dangerous torque, as all the force generated by muscle activation and opposing movements is directed toward the joint, while the scapula remains open.

This makes it difficult to achieve an optimal distribution of forces, as mentioned earlier, and increases the risk of injury to both the shoulder and surrounding structures.

The ideal approach is to have the knowledge and skills to perform this safely, whether the tone is gentle or intense.

Notice that in both situations, there’s a significant mismatch in energy and intent between the two parties.

The ideal scenario is a more balanced exchange, like in a dance: one person leads, and the other follows the suggested movement.

How to Safely Bring the Arm Behind the Back

It’s simpler than it seems. There’s a lot of unfounded chatter and literature about this movement, so the first step is to tune that out.

Let’s assume we’re building a restriction with the arms behind the back to then apply a gote-style tie or similar, possibly leading to a suspension.

To create a safe restriction, keep two things in mind:

Activation from the "Pinky Line"

Don’t touch other parts of the arm.

This activation allows the bound person to respond to the restriction and lean into the ropes when applied, establishing a nonverbal communication channel with the person tying.

Circular Movement

The shoulder joint, along with the hip, is the only "ball-and-socket" joint we have, where a spherical bone rests in a concave socket.

To facilitate its movement and avoid the bone "scraping" adjacent tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, etc.), we need to create a circular motion.

A common mistake we see in students is trying to move the hand to the back. That’s not the goal; the key is to rotate the shoulder backward. The arm, and with it the hand, will follow naturally.

We’ve noted that the best point to apply the technique is the forearm (closer to the elbow), but if that’s tricky, you can start closer to the spine, at the triceps level. (Review the ikue shibari exercise if needed.)

The limit of the movement is the bound person’s active dynamic range, so clear communication is essential, especially early on.

Over time, the person tying should develop the sensitivity to recognize that limit.

Forget About Bending the Elbow

No "box" arm positions, like those you see in photos online.

Very few people can maintain safe activation with bent elbows, so the arms will likely rest lower, around the glutes.

In the beginning, the arms might not even cross. That’s fine; the priority is maintaining activation and control.

Questions like “How do I create this or that shape?” come later. Let’s take it step by step.

Understanding the Body

In the past, our training included the idea that creating more angles in the kinetic chain increases restriction.

While that’s technically true, we’ve found it doesn’t apply to scenarios where the body will be in motion.

The technique of creating angles (arm twisting, elbow bending, wrist flexing, finger bending) is designed for immobilization. But we’re aiming to move, possibly even suspend.

So, let’s drop that idea and understand that restriction is managed not through angles but through the vectors forming a triangle. (Review the lesson on geometries.)

This anatomical restriction should not cause physical stress for the bound person.

If you notice muscle strain or pain, stop immediately. There’s likely an error in execution, and continuing risks injury.

Watch the elbows: don’t bend them, but don’t lock them either.

One final tip: don’t bring both arms behind the back at the same time. Do one, then the other.

In practice, work with just one arm at first, alternating between them.

Once you’ve successfully restricted one arm, try bringing the other back.

When practicing this movement, you can place a hand on the bound person’s scapula to feel how it responds and ensure it’s in its optimal position before executing the movement.

Every body is different: we have unique proportions, ranges of motion, and physical conditions. So, don’t mimic others; find the optimal way to create a restriction for your partner.

You’ll know the restriction is working when the person tying can manage the bound person’s body with a simple movement, prompting their body to respond as a cohesive unit.

If, for example, an upward movement throws the bound person off balance, the restriction isn’t working.

Learning to speak the body’s language means communicating what we want from it.

If we’re aiming for greater intensity in a session, we need the tools to increase that intensity safely, understanding how the body works and collaborating with it, not against it.

The same applies if we want to dial things down. The key is learning to navigate this spectrum in a way that’s both safe and fulfilling.
